Costa Dancers and the Economic Benefit of Cruise
Anyone wanting to take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Kirkwall today would have been amazed with the numbers of shoppers taking advantage of the fine weather and favourable exchange rates
Over 1200 Cruise visitors packed local shops and cafes contributing to Orkneys economy whilst another 1500 passengers went off on tour around the mainland of Orkney.
The Costa Magica on its first visit to Orkney, ( she is back on the 20th August) certainly cast a spell over the local economy with an estimated £50,000 being spent in retail and food and beverage outlets in Kirkwall today.Three dancers from the South of England who are working on the cruise ship, celebrated being on 'terra firma' by sampling local fish and chips which they described as 'totally amazing'!
A recent study by GP Wilde highlighted that the Cruise Industry is worth almost £2.8 million annually to the County of Orkney.
