Published: 24 August 2010
The Holland America cruise ship Eurodam called into Orkney yesterday delivering the County’s half millionth cruise ship passenger since official records began in the early 1980's.
With just under 2,100 passengers on board, the ship berthed at Hatston Pier at 8am. Almost 1,000 passengers went off on tour from Hatston whilst independent passengers were tendered in to the centre of Kirkwall to shop and savour local hospitality.
The Eurodam first called into Orkney in 2008 on her maiden voyage and in 2011 her sister vessels Prinsendam and Ryndam will be calling.
Orkney continues to be Scotland’s most popular cruise ship destination with on average 72 port calls annually, carrying 30,000 passengers and 10,000 crew. The cruise industry provides over £2.5 million annually to the Orkney economy.
