Orkney's highly successful 2013 cruise season comes to an end

The last cruise ship of the 2013 season will call into Kirkwall on the 23 September, the day that the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards 2013 will be announced in Hamburg Germany where Kirkwall is shortlisted as a finalist in the Port of the Year category.

This season has seen 73 cruise ships call with over 2.5 million gross tonnes of shipping, the largest cruise tonnage ever reported by the Harbour Authority. Final passenger numbers are being calculated but it is expected that up to 60,000 passengers will have called this season and around 20,000 crew.

The 2014 season has already 71 ships booked and 2015 has 30 ships already with berth and anchorage reservations.

An economic impact study of cruise ship visits to Orkney has been carried out this season by International Cruise Consultants G.P. Wild (International) Ltd and the results of that survey will be presented to Orkney Islands Council's elected members at a cruise seminar this autumn.
