Busiest Season on Record for Cruise in Orkney

Kirkwall is the most popular cruise ship destination in the United Kingdom, and this season it recorded 126 port calls delivering just over 100,000 passengers and 30,000 crew.

The cruise terminal in Kirkwall has 385 metres of berth with over 10.5 metres of draft and can accommodate the largest cruise ships in service. The port has witnessed exponential growth of over 300% in passenger numbers and 250% in cruise ship tonnage in the last 3 years.

Orkney’s geographical location is perfect for a diverse number of itineraries incorporating the UK, northern hemisphere, the Baltic region and northern Europe.

Michael Morrison, Business Development Manager with the port said’ It is our great pleasure and privilege to welcome all cruise ship vessels to Orkney, from the smaller explorer style vessels with 150 passengers on board, to the very large cruise ships with over 3500 passengers on board. As the industry grows, we continually have to reinvent ourselves to meet the demand and maintain the standards of customer service that passengers come to expect. Exceeding that expectation requires careful forward planning with a wide and eclectic group of stakeholders who are passionate about all things Orkney, and sustaining our market share for the port of Kirkwall is paramount’

In 2017, over 155 port calls and 142,000 passengers are expected.
