Lewis Chessmen are coming home
Stornoway Port Authority is proud to announce the return of the Lewis Chessmen to the Outer Hebrides next year.
Part of the Chessmen collection will become a temporary exhibition at Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway, from November 2015.
The chessmen are one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Scotland. Found beneath a sand dune near Uig on the west coast of Lewis at some point before 1831, are still one of the most recognizable heritage of the Outer Hebrides. The majority of the 93 surviving pieces were acquired by the British Museum in 1831. Eleven pieces remained in Scotland, and are usually displayed at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The Port Authority would like to take this opportunity and express our great excitement and privilege of hosting the chessmen back in the Western Isles. We hope to share this unique experience along with all the visitors.
